LIFE, DEATH, AND CATHOLIC MEDICAL QUESTIONS Question: Must we always preserve life? LENT Lent begins March 5 with Mass and the distribution of Ashes. This will be celebrated: St. William-March 4, Tues., 6:30pm St. Paul-March 5, Wed., 12 noon & 7:00pm One of the most agonizing experiences that we can have is to make a decision about whether to continue medical treatment for ourselves or for a family member. However, no preparation ever equips us fully for weighty decisions about preserving human life. LENTEN PROGRAM: “LIVING THE EUCHARIST” We will meet at both St. Paul and St. William. Dates for group meetings at St. Paul: March 11, 18, 25, April 1 (Tuesdays) April 7 (Monday) The short answer to the question, “Must we always preserve life?” is “no.” Dates for group meetings at St. William: March 12, 19, 26, April 2 (Wednesday) April 14 (Monday) (by Kevin O’Neil, CSsR & Peter Black, STD) The Church offers clear moral guidance in this area, always calling us to show respect for persons and concern for their welfare. The fundamental teaching is that human life is the most basic gift that we receive, but it is a gift given for higher goals, not as an end itself. We recognize human life as a temporary good, something that will pass, as we all must die. We ought to live and respect human life in a middle ground between clinging to life at all costs, what is called vitalism, and disregarding human life and disrespecting persons in the process. This middle ground recognizes the gift of life and encourages us to be good stewards of life but acknowledges that we are not the masters of our own lives. God alone is the giver of life. Sometimes the most responsible decision judges further medical treatment and aggressive care as too much for us and for others. Church teaching calls these medical measures extraordinary or disproportionate. In other words, preserving life at these times would work against the higher goods for which we were created. An ongoing question that we might ask ourselves is how we are to live and preserve our lives so that we give and receive love to and from God and others. Sometimes that will urge us to preserve life; other times it will move us to let go. We will begin at 6:30pm (after evening Mass). To participate, please call the office so that we have time to order the materials. Cost: $10 per person. May the angels lead you into Paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you.
