UNDER ONE GOD
If you see the news at all, it’s hard to ignore the
battles in the Middle East over territory and faith: Israel
and Palestine, violence in Syria, war in Iraq and
Afghanistan, and the emergence of the Islamic State in
Iraq and Syria, a militant group that seeks to establish an
Islamic State in the region under Sharia law. As
Christians, we must remember that despite our
differences, we have many things in common with our
Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters who are living,
suffering, and dying in these seemingly endless conflicts.
Last June, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran,
President of the Pontifical Council for the Interreligious
Dialogues stated in Towards a Genuine Fraternity
between Christians and Muslims that we must work
together to build bridges of peace and promote
reconciliation, especially in areas where Muslims and
Christians together suffer the horror of war. “Let us recall
what Pope John Paul II said to Muslim religious leaders
in 1982: All of us, Christians and Muslims, live under the
sun of the one merciful God. We both believe in one God
who is the creator of man. We acclaim God’s sovereignty
and we defend man’s dignity as God’s servant. Thus, in
a true sense, we can call one another brothers and
sisters in faith in the one God,” Cardinal Tauran stated.
The Catholic Church has worked to establish
and maintain essential ties with the Jews. Nostra Aetate,
The Declaration on the Relation of the Church to NonChristian Religions, by Pope Paul VI, speaks of the
spiritual bonds linking Jews and Christians and of the
great spiritual patrimony common to both. In an address
to the American Jewish Committee last February, Pope
Francis stated, “In addition to dialogue, it is also
important to find ways in which Jews and Christians can
cooperate in constructing a more just and fraternal
world.”
Christians, Jews, and Muslims share many of the
same beliefs and values of family and God; therefore, we
must seek to join forces and reject the violence against
all God’s children. “There is a need for a firm rejection of
all that is opposed to the cultivation of peace and
respectful relations between Jews, Christians, and
Muslims, all forms of discrimination on the basis of race
or religion, attempts to impose one’s own point of view at
the expense of the rights of others, anti-Semitism in all
its possible expressions, and signs of intolerance
directed against individuals or places of worship, be they
Jewish, Christian or Muslim. Christians wish, as such, to
contribute to the common good and the growth of peace;
they wish to do so as full-fledged citizens who reject
extremism in all its forms and are committed to fostering
reconciliation and harmony,” Pope Francis said during a
recent visit to the Middle East.
As we prepare to celebrate the Christmas
holidays, Jews are preparing to celebrate Chanukah. It is
vital that during these times we show our support,
solidarity, and prayer with all the people of the Middle
East.

BAJO UN SOLO DIOS
Si usted ve las noticias, es difícil ignorar las batallas
en el Oriente Medio por el territorio y la fe: Israel y Palestina, la
violencia en Siria, la guerra en Irak y Afganistán, y el
surgimiento del Estado Islámico en Irak y Siria, un grupo
militante que busca establecer un estado islámico en la región,
en virtud de la ley sharia. Como cristianos, debemos recordar
que a pesar de nuestras diferencias, tenemos muchas cosas
en común con nuestros hermanos judíos y musulmanes que
están viviendo, sufriendo y muriendo en estos aparentemente
interminables conflictos.
El pasado mes de junio, el cardenal Jean-Louis
Tauran, Presidente del Pontificio Consejo para el Diálogo
Interreligioso dijo en Hacia una verdadera fraternidad entre
cristianos y musulmanes que debemos trabajar juntos para
construir puentes de paz y promover la reconciliación, sobre

La Iglesia Católica ha trabajado para establecer y
mantener lazos esenciales con los judíos. Nostra Aetate, la

cristianas, del Papa Pablo VI, habla de los vínculos espirituales
que tiene los judíos y los cristianos y del gran patrimonio
espiritual común de ambos. En un mensaje al American

de que los judíos y los cristianos puedan cooperar en construir
un mundo más justo y fraternal”.

FOR THE SAKE OF GOD’S CHILDREN
Ever heard of For the Sake of God’s Children? In
2003 implemented a safe environment program
entitled “For the Sake of God’s Children”
throughout the Diocese of Wilmington designed to
keep young people participating in ministry around
the diocese free from harm. Since that time more
than 20,000 persons have participated in
background checks, committed to the ethical
standards or volunteer covenant, and received
education about the nature of and prevention of
child abuse in all its forms. Participants include the
Bishop, all priest, deacons, seminarians, religious
brothers and sisters and all lay employees and
volunteers.

Sustaining Hope for the Future Capital
Campaign
Thank you for your generous support of the
Sustaining Hope for the Future campaign. We
have pledges totaling $87,458 from 79
parishioners. Our parish goal is $146,500 over 3
years. The Diocese will receive 60% and St.
Paul’s 40% of all funds. The funds allocated to St.
Paul’s will be used to repair our church roof, repair
ceiling leaks, plaster and paint inside the church,
add additional security lights and cameras to our
property and assist with the payment of our debts.
All parishioners are invited to participate in this
very important campaign by making a pledge
today. Please review the campaign materials
you received, pray about your response, and
consider a gift to this campaign. Please return
your pledge cards as soon as possible by placing
them in the Sunday collection basket or returning
them to the rectory. Additional pledge cards are
available in the back of the church. Thank you for
your generosity in this very important endeavor.

HISPANIC MINISTRY OFFICE
The next diocesan Consejo meeting will take place
on Saturday, January 3 at Holy Cross, Dover, in
the Early Learning Center. The adult consejo will
meet at 10:00 a.m. The Joven Consejo will meet at
12:00 noon to plan a February 7 Lent Retreat
which will take place at St. John the Apostle,
Milford. Please send representatives from each
community to each meeting.
