FAMILIES BEYOND BORDERS
On November 28, Thanksgiving Day, bishops from the
border region on Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico published an
open letter titled Families Beyond Borders. In it they called the
current state of the U.S. immigration system “an offense to
God.” The bishops addressed the sense of urgency to serve
the suffering Christ, whose image is seen in the suffering
people they encounter daily throughout their dioceses,
parishes, and especially in the youth.
They also stated that there are many misconceptions
regarding undocumented immigrants and their contributions to
the U.S. For example, immigrants to pay taxes; they also
contribute to Medicare and provide as much a $7 billion
annually to the Social Security Fund, although they are not
eligible for Social Security benefits.
The bishops included three stories of immigrant
experiences to help bring a perspective on the lives,
contributions, and suffering of undocumented immigrants in this
country. However, the pastors’ greatest concern was with
underage migrants who are particularly vulnerable to the abuse
and exploitation of human traffickers, assaults by violent gangs,
rape, and abuse by authorities and smugglers on both sides of
the borders.
“Besides adults, there is a dramatic increase in the
number of unaccompanied children and adolescents, some as
young as five, migrating to the United States. These youth are
fleeing the violence of their homelands, hoping to reunite with
their parents who preceded them or seeking work to support
family members in their home country.”
More than 20,000 unaccompanied minors make their
way through Mexico toward the U.S. border every year. “These
children are often initially placed in short-term detention centers
where the lights stay on 24 hours a day and there are no
showers or recreational spaces. At times the facilities are so
crowded with juveniles that the children have to take turn just to
lie down to sleep on the concrete floors,” the bishops stated.
In addition, the federal government has deported
hundreds of thousands parents, shattering families and leaving
their U.S.-born children to suffer the consequences. “What is
happening to the immigrant family is an offense to God and
human families,” the bishops wrote.

FAMILIAS SIN FRONTERAS
El 28 de noviembre, Día de Acción de Gracias, los
obispos de la región fronteriza de México, Texas y Nuevo
México, publicaron una carta abierta titulada “Familias sin
Fronteras”. En ella, calificaron el estado actual del sistema
migratorio de Estados Unidos como “ofensa a Dios” . Los
obispos trataron de la urgencia de servir al Cristo sufriente
cuya imagen se ve en el pueblo sufriente que se encuentran
diariamente en sus diócesis, parroquias, y especialmente en
los jóvenes.
También dijeron que hay muchos conceptos erróneos
sobre los migrantes indocumentados y sus contribuciones a
los Estados Unidos. Por ejemplo, los migrantes pagan
impuestos; también contribuyen a Medicare y proporcionan
unos $7 billones anuales a través del Seguro Social, aunque
no tienen derecho a sus beneficios.
Los obispos incluyeron tres historias de experiencias
inmigrantes que ayudan a poner en perspectiva las vidas,
contribuciones
y
sufrimiento
de
los
trabajadores
indocumentados en este país. Sin embargo, la mayor
preocupación de los pastores esta en los migrantes menores

Más de 20,000 menores solos llegan a la frontera de
Estados Unidos desde México cada año. “Estos niños en un
principio son situados en centros de detención de corto plazo
donde las luces están encendidas 24 horas al día y no hay
duchas ni espacios de recreo. A veces están tan amontonados
que los niños tienen que hacer turnos para acostarse en el
cemento y dormir”, dijeron los obispos.
Además, el gobierno federal ha deportado a miles de
padres, rompiendo familias y dejando atrás a sus hijos nacidos
en Estados Unidos que sufren las consecuencias. “Lo que le
esta ocurriendo a la familia inmigrante es una ofensa a Dios y
a la familia humana”.
