THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL (CH. 2, PARTE 2)
In the next part of The Joy of the Gospel, Pope
Francis warns pastoral agents about certain temptations and
challenges they may have. It begins with an expression of pain
for the sins and scandals produced by some members of the
Church, but assures that this cannot make us forget the many
works of love of so many others, which are much more
numerous.
But everyone including pastoral agents, are affected
by the globalized culture and, therefore, subject to the most
common temptations of this culture. For example, the Pope
warns that it is evident in many pastoral agents, and even
consecrated people, a great concern for autonomy and
individualism….that the Exhortation continues, leads to a crisis
of identity and a drop in fervor. This decline in fervor leads to a
relativism of all and the Pope says, “They end up stifling the joy
of mission with a kind of obsession about being like everyone
else and possessing what everyone else possesses.” In
addition, the Pope sees in this temptation a relativism that is
even more dangerous than doctrinal relativism, and has to do
with the deepest and sincere options of life. It affects in such a
way that people cling to economic assurance of spaces of
power and human glory.
It goes on to reject a selfishness and passivity. By
trying to protect the space itself, one could enter into the
rejection of mission activities. He warns Christians not to
become “museum mummies” and insists we not allow
ourselves to be robbed of the joy of evangelization!
The next no is to sterile pessimism. Pope Francis
said, “One of the more serious temptations which stifles
boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous
and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses”. Let us not allow
ourselves to be robbed of hope!
Yes to the new relationships brought by Jesus
Christ. The encounter generates solidarity. The exhortation
also speaks of the forms of popular religiosity, which are born
of the incarnation of Christian faith in popular culture. They
entail a relationship with concrete people such as Jesus Christ,
Mary or a saint. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of
community!
No to spiritual worldliness. This is said to enclose
two temptations: one is the fascination with Gnosticism, in other
words, not being sure of anything, and the other is a doctrinal
security that is authoritative and controlling. In neither case is
one really concerned about Jesus Christ or others. Let us not
allow ourselves to be robbed of the Gospel!
No to warring among ourselves. It always pains
me greatly to discover how some Christian communities, and
even consecrated persons, can tolerate different forms of
enmity, division, calumny, defamation, vendetta, jealousy and
the desire to impose certain ideas at all costs, even to
persecutions. Whom are we going to evangelize if this is the
way we act?
Finally, the Pope list other ecclesial challenges: the
laity, roe of women, youth ministry, vocations of the priesthood
and consecrated life. He concludes this section by saying:
“Challenges exist to be overcome! Let us be realists, but
without losing our joy, our boldness and our hope-filled
commitment. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of
missionary vigor!”

LA ALEGRÍA DEL EVANGELIO (CAP. 2, PARTE 2)
En la siguiente parte de La Alegría del Evangelio, el
Papa Francisco advierte a los agentes pastorales sobre ciertas
tentaciones y desafíos que pueden tener. Comienza con una
expresión de dolor por los pecados y escándalos producidos
por algunos miembros de la Iglesia, pero asegura que eso no
puede hacer olvidar las muchas obras de amor de tantos otros,
mucho más numerosos.
Pero todos, incluidos los agentes de pastoral, están
afectados por la cultura globalizada y, por lo tanto, sujetos a
las tentaciones más comunes de esta cultura. Por ejemplo,
advierte el Papa de que se va notando en muchos agentes
pastorales e incluso en personas consagradas, una
preocupación
grande
por
la
autonomía
y
el
individualismo...eso, sigue la exhortación, lleva a una crisis de
identidad y a una caída del fervor. Tal caída del fervor lleva,
por su parte a la relativización de todo y, dice el Papa
“terminan ahogando su alegría misionera en una especie de
obsesión por ser como todos y por tener lo que poseen los
demás”. Ve, además el Papa en esta tentación, un relativismo
todavía más peligroso que el doctrinal y tiene que ver con las
opciones más profundas y sinceras de vida. Afecta de tal
manera que las personas se aferran a seguridades
económicas o a espacios de poder y de gloria humana.
Pasa luego a rechazar una pasividad egoísta. Al
tratar de proteger el propio espacio, se podría entrar en el
rechazo de posibilidades de actividades de misión. Advierte a
los cristianos que no se conviertan en “momias de museo”.
Insiste, ¡No nos dejemos robar la alegría evangelizadora!
El siguiente no es al pesimismo estéril. Dice el
Papa Francisco que “una de las tentaciones más serias que
ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota, que
nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con
cara de vinagre. “¡No nos dejemos robar la esperanza!
Si a las relaciones nuevas que genera Jesucristo.
El encuentro genera solidaridad. Habla aquí también de las
formas de la religiosidad popular, que han brotado de la
encarnación de la fe cristiana en una cultura popular. Son
relaciones con personas concretas como Jesucristo, María o
un santo. ¡No nos dejemos robar la comunidad!
No a la mundanidad espiritual. Dice que se
encierran aquí dos tentaciones: una es la fascinación del
gnosticismo, es decir, en no estar seguro de nada, y la otra es
una seguridad doctrinal que es autoritaria y controladora. En
los dos casos, ni Jesucristo ni los demás interesan
verdaderamente. ¡No nos dejemos robar el Evangelio!
No a la guerra entre nosotros. “Me duele comprobar
cómo en algunas comunidades cristianas y aun entre personas
consagradas, consentimos diversas formas de odio, divisiones,
calumnias, difamaciones, venganzas, celos, deseos de
imponer las propias ideas y hasta persecuciones…¿A quien
vamos a evangelizar con esos comportamientos?
Enumera por fin el Papa otros desafíos eclesiales: los
laicos, el papel de la mujer, la pastoral juvenil, las vocaciones
al sacerdocio y la vida consagrada. Concluye esta parte
diciendo: “Los desafíos están para superarlos. Seamos
realistas, pero sin perder la alegría, la audacia y la entrega
esperanzada. ¡No nos dejemos robar la fuerza misionera!

What does the Diocese do for survivors of abuse?
In accord with Article 1 of the Charter for the
Protection Children and Young People the Diocese
reaches out to survivors and their families
demonstrating a sincere commitment to their
spiritual and emotional well-being. Our first
obligation to survivors of clergy sexual abuse is
healing and reconciliation. Our Diocese has
appointed a Survivor Assistance Coordinator, a
licensed therapist/counselor with many years of
experience in handling sexual abuse, to coordinate
assistance for survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
The Survivor Assistance Coordinator speaks with
the survivor (and/or family) apologizing for the
offense, listening to the survivor’s experience, and
offering counseling, spiritual help, and providing for
therapy either through counselors at Catholic
Charities or agreeing to pay for expenses incurred
by the survivor if he/she chooses other counseling
opportunities. We are committed to survivor
outreach and their spiritual and emotional
wellbeing. The services offered by the Diocese are
in place for each survivor for as long as necessary.
