THE LIFE IN CHRIST:
WHAT IS CATHOLIC SOCIAL DOCTRINE?
Catholic social doctrine is the set of teachings of
the Church regarding the attitude and behavior of
Christians before the realities of the world in which we
live. Such doctrine is based on the dignity that every
human has by being created in the image and likeness of
God. The Church discusses the social realities and
defends human dignity above all else.
How was the social doctrine developed?
It was a response to the economic problems of
the 19th century. While industrialization had led to
greater prosperity, those who benefited were factory
owners, while workers increasingly suffered. As a
response to such inequality, communism arose, inciting
class struggle. The Church, for its part, responded in
defense of a fair balance between the interests of the
workers and the factory owners. It defended the right of
the workers to organize in unions and struggle against
exploitation by non-violent political means. With the
development of the doctrine, the Church began teaching
the obligation of Christians to engage in social affairs
with the goal of seeking justice for all.
What does the Church say about capitalism?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic
Church, Any form of capitalism that is not embedded into
a legal system runs the risk of deviating from the
common good and become a means in which individuals
take advantage. The church rejects this. On the other
hand, it supports a free market system that is at the
service of the individual, avoids monopolies, and ensures
that everyone has employment and the necessary
services.
What does the Church say about globalization?
Globalization in itself is neither good nor bad, but
simply a description of what has come to be the reality;
however, Pope Benedict XVI spoke very clearly about
the benefits and advantages of globalization: “This
process by its nature has spread to all economic areas.
While it has been the main force for the development of
regions and represents a great opportunity, without the
guidance of charity in the truth, this global force could
cause great harm and create new divisions among the
human family.”
What consequences does this have for us?
We are called to be aware of our consumption
habits. When we purchase expensive, innovative items,
we must be aware of whether the workers who produced
them received a fair wage. Any action in our corner of
the world has consequences for people in faraway
places, although we may not see it. Our obligation is to
study and understand the causes and consequences of
human actions and of poverty.

Nuestra Parroquia
La doctrina social católica es el conjunto de las
enseñanzas de la Iglesia sobre la actitud y el comportamiento
de los cristianos ante las realidades del mundo en que viven.
Tal doctrina se basa en la dignidad que todo ser humano tiene
por ser creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios. La Iglesia
dialoga con las realidades sociales y defiende por encima de
todo la dignidad humana.
¿Cómo se desarrolló la doctrina social?
Fue una respuesta a los problemas económicos del
siglo XIX. Mientras que la industrialización había llevado a una
mayor prosperidad, quienes se habían aprovechado eran los
dueños de las fábricas, mientras que los trabajadores sufrían
cada vez más. Como respuesta a tal desigualdad, surgió el
comunismo, que incitaba a la lucha de clases. La Iglesia, por
su parte, respondía con la defensa de un equilibrio justo entre
los intereses de los trabajadores y los de los dueños de las
fábricas. Defendió el derecho de los trabajadores a
organizarse en sindicatos y a luchar contra la explotación por
medio de medidas políticas no violentas. Con este desarrollo
de la doctrina, la Iglesia empezó a enseñar la obligación que
tienen los cristianos de implicarse en los asuntos sociales, con
el fin de buscar la justicia para todos.
¿Qué dice la Iglesia sobre el capitalismo?
Según el Catecismo de la Iglesia, cualquier forma de
capitalismo que no esté inserto en un sistema legal corre el
riesgo de apartarse del bien común y de convertirse en un
medo de que personas individuales se aprovechen. La Iglesia
rechaza eso. Por otra parte, apoya un sistema de mercado
libre que esté al servicio de la persona, evite monopolios y
asegure que todos tengan empleo y los servicios necesarios.
¿Qué dice la Iglesia sobre la globalización?
La globalización en sí misma no es buena ni mala,
sino simplemente una descripción de lo que ha llegado a ser la
realidad; sin embargo, el papa Benedicto XVI habló muy
claramente sobe los beneficios y las ventajas de la
globalización: “Este proceso por su naturaleza, se ha
extendido a todas las áreas económicas. Mientras que ha sido
la principal fuerza para el desarrollo de grandes regiones, y
representa una gran oportunidad, sin la guía de la caridad en
la verdad, esta fuerza global podría causar un gran daño y
crear nuevas divisiones entre la familia humana”.
¿Qué consecuencias tiene esto para nosotros?
Se nos llama a ser conscientes de nuestros hábitos
de consumo. Cuando compramos artículos caros muy
novedosos, tenemos que ser conscientes de si los
trabajadores que sirvieron para producirlos recibieron un justo
salario. Toda acción nuestra en nuestro propio rincón del
mundo tiene consecuencias para personas en lugares muy
apartados, aunque no lo veamos. Nuestra obligación es
estudiar y comprender las causas y consecuencias de las
acciones humanas y de la pobreza.

Parish Meeting to Elect New Parish Trustees
St. Paul’s will have an open meeting on Monday,
February 24th at 7:00 pm in the Rector y to elect
two Parish Trustees. All parishioners 18 and older
are invited to the meeting. All active parishioners
(25 years or older) are eligible to be elected Parish
Trustees.
What is a Parish Trustee?
Every Parish of the Diocese of Wilmington is
incorporated according to the incorporation laws of
the State (Delaware or Maryland) as a non-profit,
religious corporation.
In the Diocese of
Wilmington the directors of the parish corporation
are the five trustees who act on behalf of the civil
parish corporation. The Bishop of the Diocese, the
Chancellor, and the Pastor of the Parish are exofficio members of the corporation. Two lay
trustees are to be elected each year as members of
the parish corporation.
What is the Role of the Trustees?
Lay Trustees assist the pastor in his oversight of
parish management and review all major decisions
about the funds and property of the parish. Their
consultation is required for: (a) the acquisition,
lease, and sale of real estate and other major assets;
(b) execution of contracts involving major financial
commitment; (c) borrowing money and incurring
financial liability. The Trustees are also kept
informed of the financial and legal status of the
parish. Generally, the trustees do not have regular
meetings but are convened by the pastor as
circumstances require (minimally once a year in
January). It is not the role of the trustees to be
involved in the ordinary day to day business
administration of the parish. The pastor, authorized
by canon law, is to conduct the day to day temporal
business affairs of the parish in consultation and
with the advice of the Parish Council, and in
particular with the Parish Finance Council.

Reunión Parroquial para Elegir Nuevos
Síndicos Parroquiales (Trustees)
San Pablo tendrá una reunión abierta el lunes, 24 de
febrero a las 7:00 pm en la Rector ía par a elegir a dos
Síndicos Parroquiales. Todos los feligreses de 18 años y
mayor están invitados a la reunión. Todos los feligreses
activos (25 años y mayor) están elegibles a ser elegidos
como Síndicos Parroquiales.
¿Qué es Síndico Parroquial?
Todas las parroquias de la Diócesis de Wilmington están
incorporadas de acuerdo a las leyes de la incorporación
del Estado (Delaware o Maryland) como una
organización sin fines de lucro, corporación religiosa.
En la Diócesis de Wilmington los directores de la
corporación parroquial son los cinco síndicos que actúan
en nombre de la corporación civil parroquial. El Obispo
de la Diócesis, el Canciller, y el Párroco de la Parroquia
son miembros ex-oficio de la corporación. Dos síndicos
laicos están elegidos cada año como miembros de la
corporación parroquial.
¿Cuál es el Papel de un Síndico?
Los Síndicos Laicos ayudan al párroco en su
administración de la parroquia y revisan todas las
decisiones importantes acerca de los fondos y bienes de
la parroquia. Su consulta es necesaria para: (a) la
adquisición, arrendamiento y venta de propiedad y otros
bienes importantes, (b) la ejecución de contratos con
compromiso financiero importante, (c) el préstamo de
dinero y cuando la parroquia incurre una obligación
financiera. Los Síndicos también están informados de la
situación financiera y legal de la parroquia. En general,
los síndicos no tienen reuniones regulares, pero están
convocados por el párroco, según las circunstancias (por
lo menos una vez al año, en enero). No es el papel de
los síndicos a participar en la administración diaria y
ordinaria de la parroquia. El párroco, autorizado por la
ley canónica, es quien dirija los asuntos temporales de la
parroquia, en consulta y con el consejo del Consejo
Parroquial y en particular con el Consejo de Finanzas
de la Parroquia.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
Many dioceses right here in the United States do
not have enough priests and trained lay ministers
to serve their parishes. These dioceses are know
as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions
Appeal will take place this weekend to supports
these dioceses by funding essential ministries,
including seminary education and lay ministry
training. Please be generous in this Appeal and
share your resources to strengthen the Church at
home.

Muchas diócesis aquí mismo, en Estados Unidos,
no cuentan con los suficientes sacerdotes y
ministros laicos capacitados para servir en sus
parroquias. A estas diócesis se les conoce como
diócesis misioneras. El llamado para las Misiones
Católicas se realizara este fin de semana para
apoyar a estas diócesis mediante la financiación
de los ministerios mas básicos, incluyendo la
educación de los seminaristas y la capacitación del
ministerio
laico.

9:30 AM and conclude with a 5:00 PM multi-cultural
mass. The outstanding curriculum is thought provoking

educators, outreach coordinators, and all interested
