CATHOLIC SEEK POPE’S SUPPORT TO HALT
DEPORTATION
CATÓLICOS PIDEN QUE SE DETENGAN LAS
DEPORTACIONES
Immigration was on the minds of many faithful when
Pope Francis met with President Obama on March 27. In a
statement released by the White House, the President was
looking forward to discussing with Pope Francis the shared
commitment to fighting poverty and growing inequality.
Catholics in the U.S. hoped and prayed this commitment
included the poverty and inequality suffered by undocumented
immigrants in this country.
Prior to the historical meeting between the first African
-American U.S. president and the first Latin American Pope, a
Catholic delegation received a special blessing from
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez before embarking on a trip to the
Vatican to meet with Pope Francis and urge him to advocate
for immigration reform during the meeting with Obama. The
blessing came during the closing Mass of the Los Angeles
Religious Education Congress, where more than a dozen
bishops, hundreds of priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, and
several thousand people stood with their right hand stretched
out toward the delegation, in prayer, hope, and unity. The
Catholic delegation would deliver more than 1,000 letters to the
Pope from children of undocumented immigrants who live in
fear of their parents being deported. Delegations traveled to
Rome from throughout the United States including Fr. Marco
Mercado, delegate of Hispanics for the Archdiocese of
Chicago, among others. The Obama administrations has
deported over 2 million people over the past six years.
La inmigración estaba en la mente y en los corazones
de muchos fieles cuando el Papa Francisco se reunión con el
Presidente Obama el 27 de marzo pasado. En una declaración
de la Casa Blanca, el Presidente manifestó que estaba
deseando conversar con el Papa sobre el compromiso

latinoamericano, una delegación católica recibió una bendición
especial del Arzobispo José Gómez antes de iniciar un viaje al
Vaticano a encontrarse con el Papa Francisco y pedirle que
defendiese la reforma migratoria durante su reunión con
Obama. La bendición se dio durante la misa de conclusión del
Congreso de Educación Religiosa de Los Angeles, en la que
mas de doce obispos, cientos de sacerdotes, hermanos,
religiosas, diáconos y miles de laicos extendieron sus manos
en oración sobre la delegación, en oración esperanza y
unidad. La delegación católica llevó al Papa más de mil cartas
de niños de inmigrantes indocumentados que viven con el
temor de que sus padres sean deportados. La delegaciones
viajaron a Roma desde todos los Estados Unidos. La
administración Obama ha deportado a más de dos millones de
personas en los últimos seis años.
A statement released by the Vatican Press Office
following the meeting between Pope Francis and President
Obama confirmed that immigrations was part of the leaders’
discussion, “In the context of bilateral relations and cooperation
between Church and State, there was a discussion on
questions of particular relevance for the Church in the U.S.,
such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and
conscientious objection, as well as the issue of immigration
reform. Finally, the common commitment to the eradication of
trafficking of human persons in the world was stated,”
according to the Vatican.
Una declaración emitida por la Oficina de Prensa del
Vaticano después de la reunión entre el Papa Francisco y el
presidente Obama confirmo que la inmigración fue tema de
conversación entre los dos lideres. “En el contexto de las
relaciones bilaterales y la cooperación entre la iglesia y el

Ana Garcia-Ashley, executive director of the Gamaliel
Foundation stated the most important issue of this meeting was
immigration. “It’s time to stop dividing families, the President
knows it, and the Pope should tell him to take action now,”
Garcia-Ashley stated in a blog posted in uscatholic.org prior to
the historical encounter.

reunión era la inmigración. “Es hora de dejar de dividir familias.
El Presidente lo sabe y el Papa le debería decir que entrara en
acción ahora”, dijo García Ashley en un blog de uscatholic.org

“Deportations lead to poverty, desperation, and death.
Together, the two men can pray and affirm that the majority of
the people in this country, like the majority of Catholics, support
livable wages, and safe and fair migration. When these leaders
come together we can expect more real change to follow soon,”
Garcia-Ashley added.
“Las deportaciones llevan a la pobreza, la
desesperación y la muerte. Juntos, estos dos hombres pueden
orar y afirmar que la mayoría de la gente en este país, como la
mayoría de los católicos, están a favor de un salario digno, y
de una migración segura y justa. Cuando estos lideres ser
reúnen, podríamos esperar más cambios verdaderos pronto”,
añadió García-Ashley.
